What is the difference between LPG and natural gas?

LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) and natural gas are two distinct fuel types used in Australian homes: natural gas is delivered via underground mains pipes, while LPG is stored in tanks and requires different appliance configurations and safety protocols.

Natural gas and LPG serve the same purpose in Perth homes, but they are distinct fuels that require different appliance hardware and installation approaches. Natural gas is supplied through mains pipelines to suburbs across the Perth metro, while LPG is stored in portable or fixed tanks and delivered by specialist suppliers.

Appliances designed for one fuel type cannot safely operate on the other without modification. A stove, heater, or hot water service built for natural gas has burner jets, regulators, and orifices sized and calibrated for that fuel's pressure and combustion characteristics. LPG operates at higher pressure and has different flame properties, so it requires different equipment specifications. Attempting to use the wrong fuel type risks incomplete combustion, carbon monoxide buildup, and equipment damage.

Converting a home or appliance from one fuel to the other must be handled by a licensed gas fitter. In Western Australia, conversion work falls under gasfitting licensing requirements and must comply with Australian Standards. The fitter replaces burner components, adjusts regulators, tests pressure and flame quality, and certifies the work. This is why the choice between natural gas and LPG is not simply a fuel preference but a technical decision that affects which appliances can be installed and how they must be maintained throughout their lifespan.

If you need to convert between fuel types or install new gas appliances, a qualified gas fitting provider can advise on the practical and safety requirements for your property.
