What is a PTR valve?

A PTR valve, or pressure and temperature relief valve, is a safety component fitted to hot water systems that opens automatically when internal pressure or temperature becomes dangerous. The valve sits on the tank and contains a spring-loaded mechanism triggered by either condition, releasing hot water through a discharge pipe to prevent the system from rupturing.

In Perth homes and businesses, these valves protect stored hot water cylinders from pressure buildup during heating cycles or when the main water supply line is isolated but the system remains pressurised. A faulty or blocked PTR valve removes this protection, leaving the tank vulnerable to dangerous failure.
