What is a thermostatic mixing valve (TMV)?

A thermostatic mixing valve (TMV) is a device that blends hot and cold water to deliver water at a safe, preset temperature, protecting users from scalding.

A thermostatic mixing valve automatically balances incoming hot and cold water supplies to maintain a constant outlet temperature, regardless of fluctuations in either line. The valve contains a temperature-sensitive cartridge that responds to changes in water temperature and adjusts the mix in real time, holding the outlet within 2 degrees Celsius of the set point.

TMVs differ from tempering valves, which use a simpler on-off mechanism and cannot respond dynamically to temperature swings. A tempering valve simply diverts excess hot water to the cold line when the outlet temperature rises above a threshold, whereas a TMV continuously modulates flow to maintain precise control.

Australian plumbing standards mandate TMV installation in high-risk settings where scalding injury poses serious risk. These include bathrooms in residential homes and apartment buildings, aged care facilities, hospitals, and other facilities serving vulnerable populations. Some commercial premises also require TMVs under their specific codes.

Installation typically occurs at the point of use, such as shower mixing heads or bath taps, though some systems mount at the main hot water delivery point. A qualified plumber will size and set the valve according to site conditions and local compliance requirements. TMVs require periodic maintenance and cartridge replacement to remain effective, as internal components can wear or become blocked by mineral deposits.
