What is water hammer?

Water hammer is a loud banging or clanging sound in pipes caused by sudden pressure waves when water flow stops abruptly, usually from a valve closing quickly.

Water hammer occurs when moving water in a pipe is forced to stop suddenly, typically because a valve closes quickly or a tap shuts off fast. The water's momentum creates a shock wave that travels through the pipes, producing a sharp banging or clanging noise.
